Service Offering Overview
Many customers have an existing infrastructure for DNS/DHCP and are moving to appliances for security, lowered total cost of ownership, and other advantages. Infoblox appliances provide a way to merge data from disparate systems and integrate them into a single, unified database. To take full advantage of the technology requires that data be cleaned and de-duplicated in order to purge outdated records and eliminate potential inconsistencies.
Infoblox has created a set of graphical and command-line driven tools to aid in the data migration effort. Infoblox Ideal partners are trained on these tools and methodologies and can provide customers with value-added data migration services.
Data Migration Methodology
A certified Infoblox Ideal Partner engineer works with you to gather detailed information on your existing data structures including DNS zones and records as well as ranges and options for DHCP.
The engineer will then analyze the data and perform an initial trial data migration to identify any issues that need to be addressed. Many different older DNS/DHCP servers allow illegal or incorrect data. The Infoblox bloxSDB™ semantic database helps enforce protocol standards and data validity. Depending on the findings, the old data might need to be cleaned before importing. This also allows the customer to "clean-up" the data and consolidate, or isolate DNS zones and DHCP ranges or migrate IP address space.
After the dataset has been imported, the engineer will verify that it correctly mirrors the production data through the use of analysis tools such as comparative zone transfers and server configuration file differences.
After the dataset has been imported, the engineer will verify that it correctly mirrors the production data through the use of analysis tools such as comparative zone transfers and server configuration file differences.
The final step prior to cutover involves a final import of the latest dataset (in smaller environments this might not be required). At this point, the customer will be able to cutover to the new environment.
The primary tasks involved in the data migration service are:

- Gathering configuration and data files for all DNS/DHCP servers that will be migrated
- Performing a trial migration and resolving any data input issues
- Cleaning and de-duping data as needed
- Verifying the data migration
- Performing a final migration on production systems
Data Migration Methodology
The certified Ideal Partner engineer will gather all of the necessary information to migrate the customer data. The specific SoW will depend upon the number of networks, records, DHCP ranges, and custom options. A specific SoW will be created and agreed upon by both parties prior to starting the engagement..
